MATH 241H -- Calculus III (Honors)

Syllabus: Here is the projected syllabus for the course, including exam dates, and the quiz dates. Not included are the due dates for Matlab assignments, which will be announced in the course blog, see below, as the course progresses.

This course is an introduction to multivariable calculus. We will cover all of the material in chapters 11-15 of the text by Ellis and Gulick, with the exception of section 12.7. Homework will be assigned each day on the 241H blog, see below. The homework will not be collected for a grade, but doing the problems is an essential component of the course -- you cannot expect to learn the material without doing many problems on your own.

There will be 11 quizzes during the semester. No make-up quizzes will be given, but only the 10 highest scores will be used in computing the quiz grade.

There will be 4 Matlab assignments during the semester. Details will appear as the course progresses, in the 241H blog.

Prerequisites: MATH 141 and one of MATH 240, ENES 102, or PHYS 171.

Recommended : H.M. Schey, Div, grad, curl, and all that , Third Edition; W.W. Norton and Co. (1997) ISBN 0393969975. (The fourth edition might now be available -- if so, opt for that.)

Calculus on Manifolds

Grading policy: Grades will be based on the 4 one-hour exams, the quizzes, the 4 Matlab assignments and the 2-hour final exam. The one-hour exams will be counted for 100 points, but the lowest one will be multiplied by the factor of .5 in the computation of course grades. The lowest 2 quiz scores will be dropped. The point totals are:

Makeup exams will only be given for legitimate, documented absences. In the case that religious observances or official university business will prevent you from taking an exam as scheduled, you will need to give me advance notification.

Graphing or programmable calculators are not allowed during the hour exams. A cheap scientific calculator is permitted. For the hour exams, you will be allowed to bring in a 3 x 5 card with anything you like written on it (both sides).

Getting help: Besides my office hours, there will be tutoring hours for Math 241. Tutoring is by graduate students who are TA's for large lecture sections of Math 241, and any students taking Math 241H are allowed to come in for help. The schedule is available on line here .

In addition, you can find help with Matlab in the Parking Garage 2 WAM lab , or from peer training .

40. Wed. May 4. I announced (and wrote an email yesterday) that Quiz 11 and Matlab 4 have been cancelled due to my absence. Exam 4 will still take place as scheduled next Monday, and it will cover chapter 15. Today I discussed Stokes' theorem from 15.7, and did some examples. Homework: 15.7, #1,3,7,11,15,17,18,21,22. A note on grading policy effected by cancelled assignments: the only change is that your quiz grade and your matlab grade will be computed using fewer scores. The percentage each will contribute to your final grade will remain the same as before.

41. Fri. May 6. Today we covered 15.8. I explained homework problems 15.6, #19-20, as applications of Gauss' Law. I showed how we can use the Divergence theorem in 15.8 to prove Gauss' Law (this is not in your text). Homework: 15.8 #5,7,10,13,21,24-27,29,30,35. 42. Mon. May 9. Exam 4; no new homework.

43. Wed. May 11. We went over Exam 4, and a list of topics to study for the final exam. NOTE: For the final exam, you are permitted to bring a cheap scientific calculator, and one 8 1/2 X 11 piece of paper, one which you may write anything you want (on both sides). The final exam will be Monday, May 16, 1:30-3:30 pm. The location is probably room 1308, but I will confirm this as soon as I can find out for sure.
