Fall, 2003

Text: Linear Algebra and its Applications, Gilbert Strang

Instructor : J. Cooper

Office: Math 3109 . . . Phone 5-5130 . . . email . . jec@math.umd.edu

Office Hours: MW 2-3, Tu 10-12, and by appointment

Prerequisites: Math 240 or Math 461, or an equivalent first course in linear algebra.

We will cover as much as posssible of the text. The first four chapters are mostly review and we shall move through them quickly. We shall use the software package MATLAB. It is ideal for linear algebra and easy to learn. Homework will be assigned frequently, and will often involve using the computer.

There will be three hour exams and a final exam. The tentative dates of the exams are

Hour exam I . . . . . . . . . . . Changed to  Friday, Oct. 8 . . . . . . . . . 20 %

Makeup exams will be given only in the case of serious family or medical problems, or university sponsored activity, all of which must be well documented.

Grades for the hour exams will be based on the usual scale, A: 90 -100, etc. Grades for the course will be based on your final average, with perhaps slight adjustments from the usual scale.
