Course Description: Calculus is a central pillar of scientific education, and is a principal language and problem solving tool for science and engineering. At the University of Maryland, Math 140-141 is the first year sequence of calculus courses designed for science, engineering and mathematics students. Math 141 is a continuation of Math 140. It consists of techniques of integration, improper integrals, applications of integration (such as volume, work, arc length, moments), inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and series (especiallyTaylor series). We shall cover Chapters 6 - 10, except for a few sections.
Format: The class meets 5 times a week: MWF in large lecture, and TTh in smaller sections. Attendance is requested each day. The first portion of the TTh session (normally about 15 minutes) will be for questions related to homework problems and for quizzes, generally given on Tuesdays.
Homework: The homework is done using the online
homework system WebAssign. The homework deadline will be before class on
Tuesday and Thursday. The bottom five grades will be dropped. See
WebAssign at Maryland. In addition,
there are some practice problems suggested below.
Quizzes: The weekly quizzes will typically be identical to,
or very close to, some of the homework problems, either WebAssign or practice
problems. The
lowest four grades will be dropped.
Tests: There will be four hour tests (see the schedule below).
Office Hours: MW 3:00-4:00. Occasionally, it may be necessary to change this time, so let me know if you are planning to see me. Feel free to make an appointment for a different time if you cannot see me during those hours. You can also send me email. I will answer queries as quickly as possible during office hours, and as time permits otherwise.
Makeup exams will not be given. If you have an excused
absence for an exam, the grade will be replaced by 1/2 of your grade on the
final. The lowest grade will count for half. Excused absences
will be given only for valid medical reasons, University business, or appearances
in court. Excused homework or quizzes will not be used in computing
the final grade. Make-up quizzes will not be given. Any
unexcused absences on quizzes or exams or unexcused late homework will be
counted as 0, including the final exam. Any student with a valid reason
to be excused from an exam must contact me prior to the exam, either
by email or by phone, and present documentation at the
next class session attended. If you need to be excused for a
religious observance, you should let me know as soon as possible, but
in any case no later than the end of the schedule adjustment period.
The three lowest homework grades are dropped, as are the two lowest
quizzes.
REMEMBER: YOU CAN DO WELL IN THE COURSE. BUT IT TAKES WORK!
GRAPHICS CALCULATORS: Graphics calculators are an integral part of the course. The Texas Instruments graphics calculators (TI-82, TI-83, TI-85, TI-86, and TI-89) are the preferred types and are available at book stores. We will furnish information about the use of these calculators. Other types of graphics calculators are admissible, but our information about them may be limited. There are homework problems which use the calculators, but no calculators will be allowed during exams.
Tutoring: The math department provides free tutoring for 141.
