Course Description:

Math 340 is the first semester of a two-semester sequence that covers multivariable calculus,
linear algebra, and differential equations. Math 340 will concentrate on multivaribale calculus,
with some linear algebra.

Grading: Homework 10%, Quizzes 10%, Two midterms: 25% each , Final: 30%

  • The first midterm will probably be in the first week in October.
  • The second midterm will be in early November.
  • The final exam is not yet scheduled. (One guess: Tuesday, December 20, 4-6pm.)

Homework is due by midnight on the due date.
Late homework will be accepted; however, the score will
be reduced by a factor of 50%.

Each homework assignment will consist of two parts:
One part will be some problems that are to be handed in for grading.
The other part will be a list of problems that are not to be handed in.
Instead, approximately two of these problems will be chosen for a quiz on the
    homework due date.

There will be a few computer assignments using Matlab. Details will be given later in the semester.

    Approximate syllabus:

  • Chapters 1 through 7 of Colley's book:
    Vectors
    Differentiation
    Vector-valued functions
    Max-Min in several variables
    Multiple integration
    Line integrals
    Surface integrals
  • Chapters 1 and 2 of Cullen's book:
    Matrices
    Vector spaces
