Steve Halperin
Dr. Steve Halperin is a Professor of
Mathematics at the University of Maryland. Previously, he was professor and chair in the Department of
Mathematics at the University of Toronto, where he also served as acting Vice
President for Research and International Relations. He was the PI and founding
program director for Canada’s National Network of Centres of Excellence
(MITACS) connecting mathematicians across Canada to industrial users of
mathematics.
Dr. Halperin came to
Maryland in 1999 as professor of mathematics and dean of the College of
Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CMPS) and in 2010 integrated the
College of Chemical and Life Sciences into CMPS, serving as dean of the
combined College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences until August of
2011.
Dr. Halperin has
authored five books and over 90 refereed articles in his field of rational
homotopy and its applications to other parts of mathematics. He is a Fellow of
the Royal Society of Canada, Chevallier de l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques, and
a Fellow of the Fields Institute for Mathematical Sciences. He earned his
doctorate in mathematics from Cornell University in 1970, and holds a Bachelor
of Science and a Master of Science in mathematics from the University of
Toronto.
