Math 340 is the first course of the 340-341 sequence, which covers the material of Math 240-241 and 246. This includes differential and integral calculus of functions of several variables, linear algebra, and ordinary partial differential equations. Because of the more sophisticated perspective in this sequence, some topics in basic topology, differential geometry, and Fourier analysis may also be covered as the need arises. This course is excellent preparation for those intending to take advanced mathematics and science courses.

Here is the syllabus for the course, including exam dates, and grading policy.

Texts:
Class Times: MF: 10:00 - 10:50 am; W: 10:00 - 11:50 am.
Room: Math 0306.
Homework: Homework will be assigned once a week. Selected problems on each assignment will be graded. You are permitted to work with your classmates on the homework, but you must write up your own solutions and turn them in by the due date in order to receive credit. CHECK THIS SPACE WEEKLY for assignments!

10/06/03 ANNOUNCEMENTS: Due to popular demand, the date of Exam I has been moved to MONDAY, OCT. 13. Also due to popular demand, there will be brief quizzes on Wednesdays every other week from now on (excepting exam weeks). The quizzes will count towards your final grade, but not much (I am thinking about 2.5 percent). NOTE: I still expect the extra credit problem from Homework 4.5 to be handed in by Friday, October 10.

10/22/03 ANNOUNCEMENT: The date of Exam II has been moved to Wednesday, Nov. 12.

11/05/03 ANNOUNCEMENTS: 1) Office hours on Monday, Nov. 10 are Cancelled. Instead, I will be available most of Tuesday, Nov. 11 in my office. Also, there will be a review session Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2-3 pm, in Math 0401. 2) Class will be held the day before Thanksgiving (but mostly this will be a problem session for homeowork problems).

11/21/03 ANNOUNCEMENT: Here is a brief manuscipt concerning some material I covered (rather sloppily) in class: Eigenvalues, symmetric matrices, and orthogonalization . Please study these notes. We will discuss them some more in class next week. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS MATERIAL, EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT IN YOUR BOOK.

12/15/03 ANNOUNCEMENT: The review session will be Thursday, Dec. 18, 4-6 pm, in Math 0407.
