- Obituary: We are sad
to mention that department member
Alfred Gray died
of a heart attack on October 27, 1998. An
obituary may be found here. Gray was internationally
recognized for his work in differential geometry and for his books:
Two special colloquium talks
in memory of Alfred Gray will be given by
his former collaborators Maria Luisa Fernandez Rodriguez and Mark Pinsky
on May 14, 1999. An International Congress on Differential Geometry
in his memory is being organized at the Universidad del Païs Vasco,
Bilbao, Spain, September 18-23, 2000.
- Student Awards:
- Our student Ravi
Shankar has been awarded
a Sloan Dissertation Year Fellowship for 1998-99 for his work in differential
geometry under the direction of Karsten Grove.
- Stephanie Cawthorne, who
graduated in May, was honored at the Academic Festival
Celebration on May 7. She received the Outstanding Graduate
Teaching Assistant Award in the College of CMPS for 1998.
- Debra Schwartz, an undergraduate mathematics
major, was selected as the student speaker at the CMPS commencement ceremony
in May.
- Sudheer Shukla, a former undergraduate
mathematics major, has received an
NSF
Graduate Fellowship for study
at the University of Chicago.

- Mathematicians at Work:
Photographer Martha Tabor recently captured several
department members at work. The pictures will appear in the next edition of
the U. S. Department of Labor's Occupational Handbook.
- Spotlight on New Faculty:
Meet our two newest faculty members, just hired in 1997-98:
Bo Li and
Sijue Wu.
- New Interim Dean:
Our colleague John Osborn has
just become Interim Dean of CMPS, replacing Richard Herman until a
successor is named.
- New Associate Dean:
Our colleague Ron Lipsman has just assumed the position
of Associate Dean of CMPS, replacing George Goldenbaum from Physics.
Ron assures us that in his new position he will continue his research program
in Lie group representations and will continue his efforts
in undergraduate
curriculum reform in mathematics, especially through the
SCHOL and CLeaR initiatives.
- Moving On:
Three departmental members have left this past summer or
fall to assume major
administrative positions at Midwestern universities.
James
Alexander is now Levi Kerr Professor of Mathematics
and Chair, Department of Mathematics, at Case Western Reserve University
in Cleveland.
Richard
Herman is now Provost and
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign. And
William
"Brit" Kirwan is now President
of The Ohio State University in Columbus.
