History of MARY/EMPT
MARY/EMPT was developed and directed (from 1986 to 1988)
by Professor Jay Alexander, in the Department of Mathematics
at the University of Maryland, College Park.
The program was inspired by the model
of the
Ohio EMPT
program. From 1994 to 1998, about
50,000 students in over 100 schools participated.
Jay and the program were recognized with several
awards: the NSF Certificate for Local Outreach (1993),
University of Maryland Presidential Award for Outstanding
Service to Schools (1993), and the Maryland Association
for Higher Education Award for Distinguished Program (1997).
When Jay Alexander retired from the University of Maryland,
the Department of Mathematics Math department continued to
operate MARY/EMPT. Over the years, funding support was provided
by MHEC (the Maryland Higher Education Commission), the
University System of Maryland, the College of Computer,
Mathematical and Physical Sciences
and the Department of Mathematics at the University
of Maryland, College Park.
Currently MARY/EMPT is funded by
the Department of Mathematics
at the University
of Maryland, College Park.
