MATH 489 (Research Interactions in Mathematics)

DESCRIPTION Undergraduate students register for Research Interaction Teams under this number, for 1-3 credits. The student participates in a vertically integrated (undergraduate, graduate and/or postdoctoral, faculty) mathematics research group which meets regularly. Format varies but the basis of grading must include constructive participation in the research interaction team, including oral and written presentations.

Before a student can register for Math 489, the student and supervising faculty member must agree to a written contract, which must be approved by the associate chair for undergraduate studies in the mathematics department.

The contract for a typical student commitment for three credits would include the participation in the regular meetings, a description of some mathematics to be learned, a (not necessarily exhaustive) list of presentations to be made by the student, and a description of a project or projects on which the student would work. A project should involve some active investigation by the student in an area of interest to the research group. For example, a project could be investigation of a mathematical problem, with presentations of specific related work; or it might be production of specific computer simulations or demonstrations. The project should include specific activities.

At the conclusion of the semester, the student should submit to the supervising faculty member a brief report summarizing his/her work and activities, and addressing the fulfillment of the original contract. After approving the student's report, the faculty member should submit it to the associate chair for undergraduate studies in the math department.

PREREQUISITES Consent of the instructor.
