MATH 141
Format for Professor Gulick's class

FORMAT and TEXT: Math 141 is part 2 of the calculus sequence. The course meets MWF in large lectures and TTh in discussion classes. Each discussion class meets each T and Th for 80 minutes, with worksheets to be worked on by you in groupls, then graded by the TA. The text is the same: 6th edition of Calculus and Analytic Geometry, by Robert Ellis and Denny Gulick (ISBN: 0-759-31379-2). The text covers, among other topics, applications of integration, inverse functions, techniques of integration, sequences, series, polar coordinates.

HOMEWORK: As in Math 140, homework is submitted (and graded) electronically via the software WebAssign (normally) each Tuesday and each Thursday by 8:00 AM. Textbook problems are assigned (see attached sheet) but generally will not be turned in and graded. We suggest that you do the initial practice problems to get used to WebAssign. Instructions for WebAssign can be found by going to www.math.umd.edu/undergraduate/webassign

HELP: Professor Gulick and the TA's have designated office hours. During the day there are tutoring hours in MATH 0301, later in the day with the Kirwan TA's and at the Math Success Program. There is also counseling at the Learning Assistance Service and help at the Math Learning Program for math anxiety, preparation, study skills, etc.

TESTS and QUIZZES: There will be 4 50-minute tests; see the schedule. The final examination will cover the whole of the course. There will be unannounced (pop) quizzes, any day of the week, but generally at least once per week on MWF. They will generally be based on homework and on important ideas in the textbook.

GRAPHICS CALCULATORS: Graphics calculators are an integral part of the course, but are not allowed on hour tests or final examination. The Texas Instruments TI-83, TI-84, TI-85, TI-86, and TI-89 are the preferred types.

HONOR CODE: The UMD Code of Academic Integrity is administered by the Student Honor Council. The Code sets standards for academic integrity. You will be asked to write and sign the following honor pledge on each quiz and exam unless exempted by your instructor: "I pledge on my honor that I have not given or received any unauthorized assistance on this quiz/examination." Note that copying solutions from other sources is plagiarism.
