Course Description:This is an introductory course in statistics. The topics covered
include: random variables, standard distributions, moments,
law of large numbers, central limit theorem, sampling methods,
estimation of parameters, and testing of hypotheses. Selected
materials come from Chapters 1-5 and 7-8.

Classroom Policy: (a) During lectures, all electronic device (cell phone, iPad, laptop computer, etc.)
      must be put away, and cell phones must be turned off or silenced.
(b) During lectures, each student is required to either bring his/her textbook to class,
      or use small electronic device (cell phone, iPad, etc.) for e-textbook purpose only.

Homework: Homework Problems   are assigned during the lectures and posted on this webpage. Students
are expected to do all of these problems. While no homework will be collected, weekly
quizzes are given to check students' progress on their homework.

 
 
 

Quiz: Except September 3 and November 26, there is a 15-minute closed-book quiz EACH Thursday.
The problems on the quizzes are seclcted exactly from assigned Homework Problems, and all
possible problems for each Quiz will be posted on this webpage on Tuesday. There are totally
13 quizzes, but only the Best 10 quiz scores are counted for the course grade. In any situation,
NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES WILL BE GIVEN.

Exam: There will be two tests and one final exam. The materials covered by each Test will be
posted on this webpage a week in advance, while the final exam will be comprehensive.
NO MAKE-UP TESTS WILL BE GIVEN.

Formula Sheets: Limited formula sheets are allowed during tests. The formula sheets must be
self-made, and can only contain definitions, theorems and formulas. No specific
examples or H.W./Quiz/Test problems are allowed on the formula sheets!

NOTE:The conversion of a numerical grade into a letter grade is done after each test or exam,
and will be announced on this webpage. The final course grade uses plus/minus system.
