The National Association of Mathematicians(NAM) will sponsor 
Undergraduate MATHFest VII on October 23-25, 1997 in Elizabeth City, NC. 
The resarch conference will be locally hosted by the Department of
Mathematics on the campus of Elizabeth City State Ukniversity with 
grant support from the National Security Agency(NSA), an agency of the 
Department of Defense(DOD).  NAM anticipates providing financial
support for approximately 75 undergraduate mathematics majors,
juniors and seniors (mostly seniors) and approximately 15-20 
accompanying mathematics faculty.  Participants will be selected from
approximately 30-35 Historically Black Colleges and Universities and
Minority Institutions (HBCU's/MI's). 
The conference is designed to allow minority students to:

 Hear scientists discuss research and research issues in mathematics
 Meet methematicians, especially minorities and women, who can
serve as role models for them
 Interact with minority graduate students in the mathematical
sciences
 Discuss issues related to and opportunities for attending graduate
school, with graduate school faculty representatives and others
 Witness research presentations from peers
 Start networking with other students who expect to engage in graduate
studies in the mathematical sciences.

The Conference begins on Thursday, October 24. The opening session 
will be at 2:00 p.m. and the closing session ends at 2:00 pm on Saturday, 
October 26.
