P4: An Agent Based Model for Simulating Herd Dynamics Author: Elizabeth Johnson , Advisor: Bill Fagan (Biology) Problem Statement Presentation Project Proposal Abstract Biology and ecology currently lack a unifying theory for movement mechanisms as well as population level patterns. Most methods for analyzing both movement and population patterns require assumptions about the type of movement or expected population patterns. An agent based model, where each animal is represented as an evolutionarily trained neural network, is used to generate relocation data for a variety of landscapes without making assumptions about movement mechanisms. This data are analyzed using spatial metrics to attempt to classify the population level patterns that have emerged.
