Course Objectives This is a second course in Linear Algebra. We will expand on some topics introduced in MATH 240 or MATH 461 and discuss some important applications. We will use the computer system MATLAB.
Introduction to MATLAB:   Here is a short introduction to
MATLAB that can be downloaded in either pdf or postscript format
postscript . Click here for pdf
Syllabus:
1. Gaussian Elimination and Matrix Factorization; Chapter 1.
2. Orthogonality and Least Squares ; Chapter 6
3. Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors; Chapter 5.
4. Symmertic Matrices and Quadratic Forms; Chapter 7.
5. Computation with
Matrices
6. Linear Programing and Game Theory; Chapter 9 (Online).
Exams and Assignments: There will be two midterm exams, four homework assignments and a final exam on July 8. . In addition, problems from the book will be assigned as homework from time to time. These problems will not be collected but we will set aside some class time to discuss them. It is important that you do these problems.
The first midterm exam will be on Tuesday, June 14. It will cover the material on Gauss Elimination and Matrix Factorization and also Orthogonality and Least Squares (Chapter 6 in Lay).
The second midterm exam will be on Monday, June 27. It will cover Section 4.9 (Markov Chains), Sections 5.1-5.3,5.5,5.7 and 7.1-7.4.
Assignments
Informal Assignments
Grading Approximately 20% homework assignments, 50% midterms and 30% Final Exam.
