Homework
Math 113 is a credit course designed primarily as
preparation for Math 220, elementary calculus. Students should be aware
that credit cannot be earned for both Math 110 and 113, nor for both
Math
115 and 113, though it may be appropriate for some students to take
these
combinations of courses. Students are required to have a graphing
calculator. The TI-82 or 83 are recommended and will be referred to in
class. The TI-92 is not allowed to be used on tests and quizzes. To
ensure
success in this course students are expected to attend class regularly,
do homework as assigned, learn from mistakes, and seek help when
necessary
(from textbook, instructor, friends, tutor, Learning Assistant
Services,
etc.).
Homework: Students are expected to do all homework and check answers with the text before coming to class. (Answers to all odd numbered problems are in the back of the text, as well as all answers to problems in the chapter review and chapter tests). Homework will be collected daily. You are expected to spend on an average at least 2 hours on homework per hour of class time. This includes reviewing, doing problems, checking and correcting them as well as reading the new material for the next class. Requested problems will be discussed in class.
Excused absences will be given only with documentation and only for valid medical reasons, University business, or appearances in court. Excused quizzes will not be used in computing the final grade. Make-up quizzes will not be given. Any unexcused quizzes or exams will be counted as 0, including the final exam. Any student with a valid reason to be excused from an exam must contact me prior to the exam, either by email or by phone, and present documentation at the next class session attended.
In addition to the text, students will find the Math 113 Resource Manual useful. Included in the manual are worksheets and review sheets as well as practice tests with solutions and suggestions for review and lists of other resources available on campus.
Your success in this course depends largely on
being
thorough and complete when doing homework: checking, correcting, and
making
note of questions to ask, making use of available resources, and being
aware of what to focus on in reviewing for quizzes and tests. The
guidelines
on pages xxvii-xxix of the text are highly recommended reading for any
student looking forward to success in this (or any) math course.
Grading: Three hourly exams will be
given (see dates below). A total of 400 points is available in
the course:

Quality: The quality of presentation of solutions will be taken seriously in this course in the grading of tests and quizzes.
