Kinetic Interaction Team (KIT) Announcement

Numerical Solvers for Implicit PN discretizations of Transport Equations

May 2 - 6, 2016

Computer Science and Math. Division, ORNL
Computer Science and Mathematics Division

Bethel Valley Road
Oak Ridge, TN

ABSTRACT

Spherical harmonic approximations are a well-known method for discretizing equations of radiation transport.  While formally spectrally accurate, the approximation suffers from several drawbacks and is therefore not frequently used in practice.  One of the primary issues is the ability to solve the equations in a steady-state or time-implicit framework.  This KIT will focus specifically on this issue.

GOALS

The goals of the meeting are:

1) Explore and leverage the special structure of the PN equations to design a general framework for iterative solvers.

2) Begin the implementation process with a specific choice of spatial discretization.
